I was 23 when I went to my family doctor for my annual exam. I inquired about my retracted nipple to see if there was anything to worry about. My doctor (and a colleague who was a surgeon) both felt a lump and guessed that was the probable cause of my nipple retracting. I was scheduled for a mammogram the next day. It was hard to read due to the density of my breasts. So the surgeon recommended an MRI of the breast, opting to skip the ultrasound at the time. Well it turned out that I had an MRI and ultrasound, but it was too hard to see anything in the ultrasound. I was scheduled for a biopsy two days later. Doctors were hesitant because of my age, saying I would not be able to nurse any future babies.
An excisional biopsy was performed with no problems and not much pain. The pathology came back as all NORMAL! The surgery also corrected the inversion of my nipple which was retracted because of the benign mass. I was not able to nurse my daughter on that breast, and it was a painful month of trying to nurse on the other breast, but I gave my daughter what I could. So, all ended well, thank goodness. I am very glad I had the biopsy. It gave me peace of mind. Mammograms, ultrasounds and MRIs are not bad or painful at all. Don't put off tests because you are afraid. "Just do it!"
