My mother died from breast cancer and my sister had a mastectomy at the age of 42, so I was scared, but not surprised, when I discovered a slight indentation in my right breast. I was later informed that I had calcification in the left breast and had to make a decision as to what I would do. Since I had just remarried and wanted to live a long life with my new husband and watch my grandchildren grow up, I talked with my doctor about having my left breast removed.

My breasts were very heavy and cumbersome...but to this day I play a better game of golf without the two breasts that were a 38DD! I have worked for the Reach for Recovery program for many years. When I tell my story to patients, they all seemed to relax a little more.

My first mastectomy was over 32 years ago, and I am happy to say I am 80 yrs old, still playing golf. I can be any size I want when I wear a prosthesis. I did not have reconstruction and am happy with the fittings I get. Also, my husband has been wonderful about my loss. I still have checkups and tests whenever the oncologist informs me to do so. I feel very lucky it was all caught in time - and that I am here to see my grandchildren grow up.
