Information for patients

Sharing options. Providing answers.

News of a breast biopsy raises many emotions and concerns. We understand. But it's important to remember that 80% of breast biopsies do not turn out to be breast cancer. It's also important to know that you have options when selecting a biopsy procedure. This site is dedicated to evaluating your choices to help you talk with your doctor about the breast biopsy procedure that is right for you. One choice for a minimally invasive breast biopsy for breast cancer diagnosis is the Mammotome® Biopsy System.

Maintaining good breast health

No one really knows what causes breast cancer. Basically, if you're a woman, you're at risk. However, there are breast care steps that you can take to lower your risk and reduce your chances of developing breast cancer. Knowing the risk factors and practicing good breast health can help you recognize and react to breast cancer's earliest warning signs.

You should know that finding a lump in your breast does not automatically mean you have breast cancer. Fibroadenomas, a type of benign breast lump, occur in about 10 percent of all women. Non-cancerous breast lumps may occur at any age. These lumps may require removal and biopsy, just to be safe. Know that you can manage benign breast disease by practicing good breast health and partnering with your doctor.

Patient satisfaction data

Women with benign non-cancerous breast lumps can now receive care in a doctor’s office with a minimally invasive device such as the Mammotome Biopsy System, rather than having the lump removed by surgery in an operating room. A study on management of benign disease with the Mammotome System reveals very high patient satisfaction.

In this study, 236 patients underwent a biopsy procedure using the Mammotome Biopsy System; 179 had a six month follow-up; and 83 completed a satisfaction survey.* The study concluded:

  • 99% of patients would inform other women about the procedure
  • 96% of patients were satisfied with the incision appearance
  • 94% of patients would be willing to have a similar procedure in the future
  • 94% of patients had no palpable evidence of the initial lesion at their 6-month follow-up

Breast health habits

Good breast health starts by following good breast health habits. Medical professionals recommend the following:

  • Performing monthly breast self-exams (BSE), beginning at age 20
  • Receiving an annual clinical breast exam (CBE) from your doctor after age 40
  • Receiving annual mammograms, beginning at age 40
